'Devil Inside' lifts Hollywood spirits with $34.5M

The fright film "The Devil Inside" scared up a monstrous $34.5 million opening weekend to help Hollywood exorcise its recent box-office demons, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The surprise hit from Paramount Pictures debuted well above industry expectations as horror fans crowded theaters for the low-budget tale about exorcists trying to free a woman possessed by evil spirits.

Between "The Devil Inside" and solid results for holdover films, Hollywood's business soared over the first full weekend of 2012 after a sluggish holiday season that ended a ho-hum year at the box office.

Overall domestic revenues totaled $144 million, up 29 percent from the same weekend last year, when "True Grit" led with $14.6 million, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Paramount already is well into profit with "The Devil Inside," an independently produced movie that the studio bought for $1 million. It's the latest such low-budgeted horror acquisition for the studio, which bought "Paranormal Activity" cheaply and turned it into a $100 million sensation that was followed by two hit sequels.

DOH launches safest ‘firecracker’ for New Year

THE Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) launched Wednesday what it considers as the world's safest firecracker to reduce the number of injuries during New Year's Eve celebrations.

It is a compact disc featuring sounds of different firecrackers, such as the watusi, Judas' belt and whistle bomb, among others.

"We call it the Goodbye Paputok (a.k.a. The Safest Firecracker Xperience). This is the safest firecracker in the world. Instead of lighting firecrackers, we should just play this," DOH Assistant Secretary Enrique Tayag said.

The music CD also has a "Fireworks Symphony" preceded by a countdown, as commonly practiced around the world during moments before midnight of January 1.
After being mass produced, the CD will then be distributed to local government officials, which will be tasked to reproduce them and distribute to constituents.

Rurouni Kenshin to see Live-Action Film Next Year

22-year-old actor Takeru Satoh (Kamen Rider Den-O, Rookies, Beck, Ryōmaden) will star in a live-action film adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin samurai manga next year. Keishi Ōtomo will direct Satoh on this new film, just as he did in last year's NHK historical television series Ryōmaden. Warner Brothers Pictures Japan is producing with its president William Ireton, while Studio Swan (Paradise Kiss) is in charge of the actual film production.

The Sankei Sports newspaper adds that the staff aims to release the film internationally and eventually make a series. This will be the first live-action adaptation of the manga.

Meet the creator of ‘Johnny Bravo’

Fil-Am Van Partible, creator of the popular American animated series “Johnny Bravo” on Cartoon Network, said he dreams of seeing more Filipino content in international animation.

“I honestly haven’t seen very much so I get excited when I see Filipinos working in the animation industry,” Van told Inquirer Entertainment in a recent phone interview. “Like Alex Niño (artist for Marvel and DC Comics) … I met him and told him I grew up seeing his work.”

On season five of “Johnny Bravo,” Van said he hired as many Filipinos as he could. “There were four of them (including singer-actress and Inquirer Entertainment columnist Lea Salonga) … ”

Van was born Efrem Giovanni Bravo Partible in Manila, but traces his roots to Bacnotan, La Union. He is currently based in Salinas, California.

He has not yet returned to the country since he left for the United States when he was 9. “My work schedule hasn’t allowed me to do that,” said Van, now married and a father of two. “Usually, when I fly out to Asia, it’s through Cartoon Network. My work hasn’t taken me to the Philippines yet. It would be fun.”

Michael Bay Will Direct Fourth Transformers Film

Michael Bay is in final negotiations to direct a new Transformers film, insiders tell Vulture. In recent days, Bay has been assembling a cast for a long-gestating project that even predates Bay’s entry into planet-destroying, Pain and Gain, based on a three-part New Times story about the infamous “Sun Gym gang,” a group of dimwitted Miami bodybuilders who kidnapped, tortured, and robbed a Florida businessman but got their comeuppance when their left-for-dead victim hired a private eye to hunt them down. Insiders tell Vulture that Bay has been seeking to adapt the sordid revenge tale almost since its publication in 1999, and that it’s proving the major blandishment in getting Bay to commit to launching a new Transformers cycle. "Without Pain, there’s no tit for tat," explains one person familiar with the talks, "That’s Paramount’s leverage."

Nicolas Cage's 'Superman' Comic Sells for $2.1 Million

It's a good thing Nicolas Cage was able to get his rare copy of "Action Comics" No. 1 back in April after it was stolen from his house in 2000. Because in an online auction on Wednesday, the most sought-after comic in history sold for a record $2.1 million, after 50 people bid on the June 1938 book in which Superman makes his debut.

Cage's copy (though the identity of the owner has not been disclosed, many believe it still belongs to the actor), one of only 100 believed to remain in existence, was graded at 9.0 before the auction, making it the best condition of an Action #1 that has ever been graded by the leading comic book grading company, Certified Guaranty Company. Shattering the previous $1.5 million record for a less-well preserved copy of "Action Comics" No.1 sold last March, Cage's comic became the most expensive to ever sell at auction
, when it went for $2,161,000.

And it almost didn't happen. Cage's comic was stolen from his house in 2000 and then recovered by Los Angeles police when an unidentified man bought the contents of an abandoned storage locker in the San Fernando Valley. Cage reported it stolen on January 21, 2000, after noticing that it, along with two other rare comics, had been stolen from security frames mounted on the wall of his Los Angeles home.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, experts believe that only five other No. 1's with quality near Cage's exist and all are in private hands. Cage bought his copy at auction in 1997 for around $150,000.

'Breaking Dawn' Passes $500 Million Mark Worldwide

The latest “Twilight” teen vampire sequel was the most popular movie in North America for the third weekend in a row, industry estimates showed Sunday.

The vampire heart-throbber neared the quarter-billion-dollar mark, raking in a total of $247.3 million since it opened, and $16.9 this weekend alone, according to Exhibitor Relations.

That put the teen flick ahead of “The Muppets,” the new film based on the Jim Henson puppet characters, which grossed $11.2 million in its second week in theaters for a total run of $56.1 million so far.

Martin Scorcese’s first 3D film “Hugo” came in third place. The adventure drama based on Brian Selznick’s novel “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” about a boy who lives alone in a Paris railway station raked in $7.6 million.

Staying in fourth place was animated family comedy “Arthur Christmas,” about Santa’s son tasked with completing a mission by Christmas morning. It pulled in $7.4 million.

In other family fare, penguin tale “Happy Feet Two” landed in fifth place, with $6 million.

 Eccentric “Bad Romance” songstress Lady Gaga says she has an “inability to know what happiness feels like with a man,” in typically outspoken comments accompanying a nude magazine photospread.

Gaga posed for a series of trademark Annie Leibovitz pictures on the cover and inside pages of the latest edition of Vanity Fair — including one shot of her naked, being painted by veteran crooner Tony Bennett.

“I have never felt truly cherished by a lover. I have an inability to know what happiness feels like with a man,” she told the magazine, suggesting she might be destined to be a single Lady forever.

And she added: “I say this honestly, and this is my new thing as of the past year: when I fight with someone I’m in a relationship with, I think, ‘What would my fans think if they knew this was happening?’

“How would they feel about my work and about me as a female if they knew I was allowing this to go on?’ And then I get out,” she said.

Action movie 'Immortals' wins Weekend Box Office

Action movie "Immortals" slayed its competitors at the weekend box office, taking the top spot domestically and pulling in an estimated $68 million around the world. The 3D movie's performance surpassed expectations and beat new Adam Sandler comedy "Jack and Jill" plus another strong showing for animated film "Puss in Boots," according to studio estimates released on Sunday.

"Immortals" ruled the domestic charts with $32 million in sales at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters, plus an estimated $36 million from international markets.
The film attracted its core target audience of young men to watch the story of clashes between ancient Greek warriors played by Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke. Seventy-five percent of moviegoers were under age 35, and 60 percent of the audience were male. Other films aimed at that type of audience had struggled in recent weeks.

"People were concerned action fans were staying away from the cinema. They definitely came out in force for 'Immortals,'" said Kyle Davies, president of worldwide theatrical distribution for Relativity Media, the independent studio that released the film.
