Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Hits $1 Billion Milestone in Just 16 Days!

When it comes to Call of Duty, there’s no mistaking the property’s selling power. It’s more a matter of figuring out how many Brinks trucks Activision is going to be driving away with every year. Even knowing that every Call of Duty for the past few years has continually raised the sales bar ever higher, it comes as a bit of a surprise that Modern Warfare 3 recently set the record for the fastest billion dollars in sales. The previous title-holder, a little indie film you might know as James Cameron’s Avatar, took seventeen days to earn its first billion. That should give you an idea of how ridiculous it is when we tell you that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 only took sixteen days to do the same thing.

Activison’s Bobby Kotick realized the impact the franchise has had on pop culture, as he said in Activision’s announcement, "Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences increasingly value interactive experiences over passive experiences.” Though it’s one of those “passive experiences” Kotick is speaking about, Avatar went on to earn just over $2.7 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. It’s entirely
possible that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 could even pass that number before its run is over. Despite the fact that 2011 isn’t quite over yet, and there are still some major movie releases coming in a few weeks, Modern Warfare 3 alone has made more than 10% of the combined US box office totals for the year (again, according to Box Office Mojo.

There aren’t that many more sales records to break, so from here on out it looks like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be blazing its own money-making path.
